Edgefest 1999: Day 1

We got to Molson Park at like 5:50am, as you've probably noticed from my other reviews, if
you've taken the time to read them.. I like to be early. Very early, especially when it's a
silverchair related event. There's not much to tell about the morning... Molson Park provided
a free breakfest for the early birds, and in each bag there were little Canada Day tattoos
for everyone, seeing as it was Canada Day. I went up there with 3 friends, Katie, Gillian
and Ryland. All of them, not being big silverchair fans, 2 of them not being fans at all
actually.

Anyway, it was cold in the morning, cloudy and the grass was damp. Not a good way to start
the day. But we got let in an hour early, 11am. So we walked around and ended up splitting
up because my friend Ryland came for Finger Eleven and Treble Charger which were both on the
small stage, Gillian went with him. So me and Katie were waiting at the gate, because if
you know Molson Park you'll know what I'm talking about but if not, once you get inside the
first gate, there's another gate around the mainstage, so even if you get in an hour early
you still have to wait at the gate around the stage. So we stood there for like hours cuz
they opened them up at like 2 or something. So when the gates finally opened everyone but
us rushed the stage, but I mean we got there in good enough time that we were like maybe 10
rows from right up front. But the crowd moved in quick and it got tight, and very hot.

Anyway, the Rasclaz were terrible, if you know me you know I am as anti-rap as you can get
so it was just like brutal for me to have to sit through that horrible noise. All they did
was like self promotion on their new album or something, they had people holding signs up
on stage with the release date and shit for their new album. No one was really into them
until they played Northern Touch which was like the only song anybody knew. So enough about
them, they sucked, flat out. Then, next Wide Mouth Mason, jezuz they were like saviors
compared to the rap guys, but still they werent excellent or anything. By now I was like 5
rows back, mosh pit started to move a bit and I was able to nudge my way up there. Edwin
came on next, very impressive. I didn't think he'd do much without I Mother Earth, but I
think he'll do just fine, he was awesome. Next Matthew Good, damn they rock too, I never
realized it though. Very good live band. And by now it had like poured, like there was
really no point in trying to stay dry because it just wasn't gonna happen. The cool zone
tents were empty, there was a mud slide going like in that Green Day video.. it was just
awesome. Until however we were informed of silverchair being delayed. Damn! But it was
alright because it gave me more time to edge up front, by the time they got on, after
an hour's delay, I had made it to 2nd row. Which would be were I stayed for their entire
preformance.

The last time I'd seen them was in May, so I was really anxious to see them again, I mean
when they were at the Warehouse in March they were amazing, but I'd never seen them play
outdoors before so I was excited. It was actually pretty funny to watch them play in the
rain because I mean they couldn't move around anywhere, they had to stand in like one spot
because Chris and Daniel both had to stay on a towel so they didn't like fall head-banging
or something because the stage was so wet. It was so hot in the pit during silverchair
that "steam was rising" off the crowd. It was awesome, I was hoping Daniel would say
something about the steam rising, but he didnt. He just mentioned the rain a bit, and then
he did the hallilugah (or however the hell it's spelt) thing before The Door, and he
also mentioned something about his dying pet. I think he was joking.

Anyway, they were yet again amazing!!! They played Lie to Me instead of Satin Sheets which
was to my liking cuz Lie to Me live is just awesome, I love Satin Sheets too, but Lie to Me
is amazing. Plus, it doesn't matter anyway because they played Satin Sheets the next 2 days.
The whole setlist went like this:

israel's son
emotion sickness
slave
pure massacre
abuse me
ana's song
tomorrow
lie to me
the door
freak
anthem for the year 2000

I think Daniel could have gotten a bit better crowd support on Anthem but hey I mean maybe
the rain made everyone tired or something. So after they were done, I got like right out
the pit cuz I had to find my friends. It was funny too, because everyone seemed to want to
clear out after silverchair. Hole was so NOT the headliner @ Edgefest, silverchair was. I
don't care who says what, there were way more silverchair fans there than there were for
Hole, or any other band for that matter. So anyway, I was covered in mud when I finally
found my friends, I didn't go in the mud slide, but I mean just walking in all that got
me full of mud. Pretty fun, if you ask me, that is what outdoor festivals are, blood,
sweat and mud! Yeah, yeah, yeah! So then I bought a poster, with wet money, and we left.
We got home at about midnight, because my friend's mom was late, but it was alright
cuz I didn't care. I saw silverchair, I was happy. I went to bed right away, got up
5 hours later and went back!! Yeah baby Day 2 rocked harder!

Unfortunatly my camera was destroyed in the rain, the few pictures I got aren't worth
scanning so I never worried about it. Pictures or not though Edge 102 sure knows how
to throw a party!
