"You think you can keep on going livin' like a king......I strongly doubt it" So silverchair sang of Tomorrow two years ago. The question is: do they still feel that way today? Sure, Frogstomp sold a billion copies, but more impressive is the fact that Tomorrow, aside from being the 5th most popular Australian single ever, was the most played track on U.S alternative radio in '95. Not to mention that silverchair toured North America no less than three times in a six month period that same year! Living like kings? Try freaks. Three 15 year old rock stars on an intensive world tour with their mothers, can't frolic with the fans after good gigs but have to meet plenty of business suits at the record label parties and they still had to do homework too! Is there ever a good time to learn a hard lesson? Rock and roll looks like all fun and games but it work. Hard work. That's a truth that musical chairs ~ Daniel Johns, Chris Joannou and Ben Gillies accepted with incredible maturity, the ever-touted age issue not withoutstanding. Enter FREAK SHOW, the album whose title Johns describes as "a good theme for any travelling rock band". Don't get him wrong: his point isn't that silverchair's members are weirdos ~ it's that having audiences gawk and point if part of human nature. "We don't feel like freaks," he adds. "People just think you're different, but you're not" Try telling that to silverchair's five million (or so) fans, through they certainly wouldn't be at fault when they fail to understand that "Most of the songs on the new album are about being percieved as being different." The only way these harried Aussies are ever going to live normal lives is by recording an average album. Looks like freaking out's gonna be in for a while. written by Janeane Garsh Bonus: 10 band names silverchair never even considered: 1. tripleplatinumchair 2. silversofa 3. silvertab 4. silverCher 5. sillychair 6. sillierchair 7. them guys who's album names are 9 letters long and begin with "Fr" 8.
